Building a concrete sidewalk is one of the most satisfying do it yourself projects. It is possible to create a strong and beautiful path with the help of proper materials and advice. I will explain each stage to you and make it very easy for you to understand.

Step 1: Plan Your Sidewalk

First, determine where you would like to have your sidewalk. Determine the length and width of the given area. Think of any curves or turns that may be required. It is advisable to have a mental picture of your project before you commence the project. With a measuring tape, draw the dimensions directly on the ground. Ensure that the path is not blocked by trees, bushes or any other form of hindrance like rocks. Make a rough sketch on paper. This will assist you to be organized.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

You will need several materials and tools to get started. Here’s a list:

  • Concrete mix

  • Water

  • Wooden stakes

  • Hammer

  • Nails

  • Shovel

  • Wheelbarrow

  • Trowel

  • Level

  • Concrete float

  • Broom

Get everything ready before you start. Having all your materials on hand will make the process smoother and more efficient.

Step 3: Prepare the Area

Dig out the area for your sidewalk using a shovel. Till the soil to a depth of about 4 inches. Any grass, roots, rocks or debris should be cleared out. The surface of the material should be plain and level. If the ground is not flat, then you might have to dig more soil from the higher side and add more on the lower side. Tamp the soil down using a tamper or a piece of plywood. This will give you a firm platform on which you will be pouring your concrete.

Step 4: Setting up the forms

Reinforcement bars are the wooden forms that confine the concrete into its final shape while it is hardening. Drive wooden stakes into the ground at the edges of the area you want to pave with sidewalk. Lay the stakes across the boards and use them to hold the wooden boards firmly in position. Such boards should be as straight as possible. The boards should be hammered to the stakes in a way that they will enclose the area all round. Level the boards to ensure that they are flat using a level. This step is very important in order to have a smooth and level sidewalk.

Step 5: Mix the Concrete

Pour the concrete in a wheelbarrow and add water to it. In this case, the ratio of the concrete mix depends on the instructions on the concrete mix bag. Usually, you will incorporate the water slowly while stirring until you obtain a stiff and manageable paste. The mix should be coherent and should not crumble but at the same time should be somewhat malleable. Be sure to stir well to ensure that there are no lumps or areas that are dry.

Step 6: Pour the Concrete

Begin to pour the concrete into the forms. It is then advisable to use a shovel to spread it evenly. It is recommended that you do a start to end approach. Ensure that the concrete gets to the corners and edges of the forms. This is because if the concrete starts to set before you are done, it becomes very hard to work with. Spread the concrete using the shovel and level the ground where there is a possibility of low areas.

Step 7: Smoothing of the surface

After the concrete has been placed, finish it by pulling a trowel across the surface. Make long, even strokes. This will assist in getting rid of any air bubbles and ensuring that the surface is as flat as possible. It is also important that the level of the surface is checked often. If there are any high spots, level them out. If there are low spots, put a little more concrete and trowel it in.

Step 8: Add Texture

In the case of the concrete structure, the texture can be added while the concrete is still wet. This step is not mandatory but is useful in order to avoid slipping. Lightly sweep the surface with a broom in the same direction as the wind blows. Do this gently to achieve a non-slip surface. You can make straight lines or patterns of your choice depending on the design you want to create.

Step 9: Let It Cure

This is the stage where the concrete is allowed to dry up and harden up or set. This normally takes about 24 to 48 hours. During this time, it is necessary to maintain the surface wet, so that it can continue to absorb water. You can also use water by lightly sprinkling it over the concrete. This assists in avoiding formation of cracks and helps in obtaining a good finish. Do not use the sidewalk during this time for walking.

Step 10: Remove the Forms

After the concrete has cured, you can remove the forms. Carefully pull out the stakes and wooden boards. Do this gently to avoid damaging the edges of the sidewalk. If the boards are stuck, tap them lightly with a hammer. Once the forms are removed, the edges of your sidewalk should be smooth and even.

Step 11: Clean Up

Cleaning up is an important final step. Concrete can harden quickly on tools, so wash everything with water immediately. Clean your wheelbarrow, trowel, and any other tools you used. Store them properly for future use. Dispose of any leftover materials according to local regulations.
